Laboratory of Geodesy & Geomatics Engineering

The TUC research group, which belongs to the Laboratory of Geodesy & and Geomatics Engineering, consists of researchers coming from a variety of disciplines, such as Satellite Geodesy, Precise Positioning, Navigation, Remote Sensing, Image Analysis, Statistical Data Analysis, Oceanography, Hydrography and Underwater Positioning. The principal researchers of this Laboratory are: Stelios Mertikas, Professor and Laboratory Director, Dr. Daskalakis, Mr. Xen. Frantzis, Mr. Ach. Tripolitsiotis, Mrs.R. Papadaki, Mr.  St. Karasavvidis, and Mr. D. Andrikopoulos.

 

  • Prof. Stelios Mertikas received a M.Sc.E. (1983) and a Ph.D. (1987) from the Department of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering in the University of New Brunswick, Canada. He has about 25-year experience with satellite precise positioning, navigation, quality control and remote sensing. He has been involved in research programs in North America and contributed to the development of satellite software programs in Canada, most of which are commercially available today. He has worked as a Lecturer and Professor at the University of New Brunswick and the University of Toronto, Canada, respectively. He was post-doctoral fellow at the University of Calgary, Canada in 1991 and also Honorary Visiting Fellow at the School of Geomatic Engineering of the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia during his sabbatical in 1996. He was also a Japan Science and Technology fellow at the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention, in Japan in 2000 for 3 months. He is now Professor at the Division of Exploration and Positioning at the Department of Mineral Resources Engineering of the Technical University of Crete.
  • Dr. Antonis Daskalakis received a Diploma in Physics (2003) from the University of Patras, Patras, Greece, an M.Sc.E. (2005) and a Ph.D. (2009) in Medical Physics, from the University of Patras, School of Medicine, Patras, Greece. He has 5-year of experience with image and signal processing, pattern recognition and machine vision, and 12-month experience with satellite altimetry and remote sensing. He has been working on several national and European research projects as a co-investigator. He has also been working (1 year) as an adjunct lecturer in Signal and Image Processing at the Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering, Technical University of Crete, Greece. He is now working as a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Laboratory of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering at the Department of Mineral resources Engineering, Technical University of Crete, Greece. Dr. Daskalakis has coauthored 18 publications in International Journals with Impact Factor and more than 30 publications in International Conferences with Referees.
  • Dr. Vasileios Tserolas is a Post-Doctoral at GeoMatLab. He holds a Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the Democritus University of Thrace, Greec, a Master's Degree and a Ph.D. from the Dept. of Electronic Engineering at Nihon University, Japan on mathematical models for neurons and their applications in neural systems. In 2008, he also worked for 2 yeras as a Post-Doctoral at the Particle Simulation and Thermodynamics Group, Computational Materials Science Center, at the National Institute for Materals Sciences, Tsukuba, Japan. As of Sept 2010, Dr. Tserolas has joined the GeoMatLab and been working on signal processing and abrupt change detection of satellite signals.
  • Mr. Frantzis is an engineer with a Master’s degree from the Mineral Resources Engineering Dept. of the Technical University of Crete. He has been working on multipath effects of the GPS signal, the establishment of permanent GPS arrays and evaluation of marine pollution with satellite images.
  • Mr. Tripolitsiotis holds a Dipl. Eng. and an M. Sc. iin Mineral Resources Engineering from the Technical University of Crete. His main interest are on GNSS array development.
  • Mrs Papadaki is a Geologist from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She holds an M.Sc. in Environmental Management from the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania and an M.Sc. from the Mineral Resources Engineering Dept. of the Technical University of Crete. Her interests are on the detection of active geological faults using satellite images, SAR interferometry and Geographic Information Systems.
  • Mr. Bouros is specialized on computer networks design, satellite communications, development and implementation. He lolds a Dipl. Eng. from the Informatics and Computer Engineering Department, University of Patras, Greece.
  • Mr. Karasavvidis is expert on database applications, Internet-based Information Systems, and holds a Dipl. Eng and an M.Sc. from the Electronic and Computer Engineering Department, the Technical University of Crete.
  • Mr. Andrikopulos is an engineer with a Dipl. Eng. degree from the Mineral Resources Engineering Dept. of the Technical University of Crete. He has been working on satellite altimetry, GPS, and SAR interferometry.
